Out of the Blue
MESOTHELIOMA was the furthest thing from Brian Kember’s mind when at the age of fifty two he began to experience shortness of breath.Exposed to Asbestos as a child living with his parents in the asbestos mining town of Wittenoom in Western Australia; he could not have imagined that forty five years later, he would be diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma and given a prognosis of three to nine months.
So began Brian’s courageous two year battle with this debilitating disease and his wife Lorraine’s emotional journey of care. Her determination to care for her husband at home and to ensure that he did not suffer unnecessary pain, resulted in him attaining a quality of life few thought possible.
Shortly after Brian was diagnosed with mesothelioma, Lorraine wrote him a poem called ‘Loving You’ (see excerpt below) words taken from this poem later became the title of her book.
Excerpt: So down this frightening road we’ll go together
Lean on me when ever you are tired
and if somewhere along the way we’re parted Wait for me I’ll soon be by your side…
The full version of ‘Loving You’ can be found on P.24 of the book.
Lorraine has written her book ‘Lean on Me’ in the sincere hope of bringing inspiration and strength to others.
Recommendation: Dr Andrew Dean MB.ch.BMRCH(UK) FRACP Consultant Physician in Palliative Care:
Lorraine’s refreshing discussions, thoughts and views really do provide a good insight to the trials and tribulations that accompany an illness such as this but also emphasize the good things that they experienced together and the benefits they got from their treatment. It is this writing that actually gives such hope to anybody who is potentially facing the same journey. I believe that this is a truly amazing book that everybody with cancer should read.
Read below one of the many letters Lorraine receives from her readers
Dear Lorraine,
I haven't seen anything like your book anywhere, to people like me it is like a shining beacon in a vast ocean! I still read your book as I feel it’s the only link I have with someone else who understands what I am going through! You are still my place in the dark I can go, knowing you will understand every feeling or thought I might have. I am just one of those numbers who will always be grateful for your deciding to write it all down, pouring out your heart, and your feelings, which must have been hard, but gratifying, probably not knowing how that courage and determination would eventually be a lifeline to many others like me.
Love Cheryl

ASBESTOS A TIME BOMB IN THE MAKING
Tragically the word mesothelioma is becoming more and more well known. The mere mention of it striking fear into all of us for we know that it is associated with death. Asbestos is the reaper, mesothelioma its hand maiden.
Most of us have at some time in our lives been in contact with products containing asbestos. We sat in asbestos class rooms, stood beside our fathers as they cut asbestos fencing and pulled up old linoleum with asbestos clogged to the back of it. We even visited the local tip where broken sheets of asbestos lay open to the wind.
Mesothelioma the largest man made epidemic
Records show that there is higher incidence of asbestosis and mesothelioma, amongst those who have directly worked in asbestos mines, ship yards and companies making products from asbestos; however there are a large number of people afflicted, who have never worked in these industries. Many women have succumbed to the disease simply because they shook the dust from their husband’s clothes before putting them in the wash. Children innocently playing in their own back yard inhaled the deadly dust; they had no way of knowing that their sand was the deadly asbestos blue. A good bath at the end of the day may have removed the dust from their skin but the dust in their lungs remained and would lay dormant for many years before claiming its deadly legacy. Brian Kember was one of those children.
Mesothelioma in Australia It is documented that Australia had the highest per capita use of asbestos in the world from the 1950’s until the 1970’s. As a tragic consequence, Australia now has the highest per capita incidence of mesothelioma in the world. With more than 500 Australians contracting mesothelioma per year, it is estimated that up to 18,000 Australians will die from this asbestos related cancer by the year 2020.
Asbestos Disease Association member’s world wide are working tirelessly and fighting almost insurmountable odds to ban asbestos form all countries of the world. It is a sobering and frightening fact that even if we were successful in this quest today, the legacy of asbestos related diseases will continue for five decades.
