Global Asbestos Congress – Tokyo Japan November 2004

I have recently returned from attending the Global Asbestos Congress 2004 in Tokyo in which I was an invited speaker in Plenary Session – Empowerment of Victims and their Families. More than 800 delegates from 40 countries attended the 3-day conference. For me, it was an amazing experience to address and to be a part of such a large gathering of people, united in our quest to rid the poison of asbestos from every country in the world. The empathy, passion and determination of everyone present was truly inspirational.

It was a sobering and frightening realization to learn, that millions of people all over the world have been exposed to hazardous asbestos, many of whom will suffer illness and/or death as a result, yet to date, only 28 countries have banned asbestos. Unbelievably, Canada and the United States have not. Canada being one of the largest asbestos exporters to developing countries. The most frightening realization of all is the fact that even if we successfully banned asbestos today, from every country in the world, disease and death due to the inhalation of asbestos dust, will continue for more than five decades.
